Summer Camp Meals
This Summer Camp’s main challenge is for participants to find good meals. Some of you have been to Kelowna before (2010, 2011, 2012) and might remember campers packing food and cooking utensils to come to Camp.
Let us not let such a minor detail to impede a great camp experience. To explain the problem of meals, I need to bring to everybody’s attention that the University Cafeteria will not be opened on the weekends. Most of you will be arriving on June 17th, Friday and the cafeteria will be closed in the afternoon and will not reopen until Monday June 20th at 8 am.
The Camp Committee recently had a meeting to discuss how to resolve this very important issue. Our thought is to turn this lemon of a problem to delicious lemonade. Please think of the theme of this year’s camp as a Friendship Camp.
Therefore during this Camp, don’t be shy to make new Friends. Many people will need rides to grocery stores or restaurants. Many people will have use of cars. Please get together and car pool for restaurant/grocery store/beer RUNS. We will set up a meeting place at the dojo (UBC gym) for people to hook up. The first scheduled meeting will take place at the dojo at 5 pm on June 17th. There will be lots of local and visiting aikidoists there setting up mats or milling around. Subsequent meeting times could be after the Morning classes end at 12 pm and after the Afternoon classes end at 5 pm.
Other solutions are:
- The closest restaurant is at the Four Points Sheraton at 5505 Airport Way. Just call 250-807-2000 and ask for the shuttle service and they will come and pick up a small group (4-7) at the International Mews road between the Kalamalka and Nicola residences. The distance to walk is 1.8 Km and takes about half an hour one way.
- Breakfasts on June 18th and 19th need to be addressed. a) The Starbucks on campus will be open from 8 am to 12 pm on those days. b) The Okanagan Aikikai members will also have coffee, muffins and fruit available at the dojo (foyer of the gym) at 8 am when the gym opens.
- Lunches and Suppers for those days or any days, please car pool to restaurants or grocery stores. Meet at the gym foyer after morning or afternoon classes end.
- Most people have booked rooms with kitchens so are prepared to come to camp and cook meals. The single dorm rooms have a common living/kitchen area on each floor so it is also possible to cook meals for oneself. However, folks in single dorm rooms, please don’t hesitate to visit the “apartment” folks during meal times.
This is a Canadian Camp and as Canadians, we should let people know how friendly we are, besides being the nicest. So far, there are foreign registrants from the US and the UK. Please help us Welcome Everybody!
